Recently 31 states recognize that cancer development in firefighters is likely due to conditions the firefighters were exposed to on the job. There are states that realize that cancer is an occupational illness, and offer employees such as firefighters workers compensation to help assist with some of their heathcare costs What happened to the other 29 states? Why is this not recognized by all states?

 

One such reason may be the length of time it takes to develop the symptoms. One such cancer is Mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma. The danger of mesothelioma really lies in the fact that many times it’s not diagnosed for years since the symptoms take years to manifest themselves. (20-30 years)

 

Another industry afflicted by high rates of mesothelioma asbestos exposure is the automotive industry. Recently there have been many cases in the United Kingdom dealing with asbestos related disease.

Asbestos was used predominately in the automotive industry due to the fact that asbestos has a high tolerance to heat and friction. Even today asbestos is used in the brakes and clutches but in much smaller amounts then were used in older cars.

The problem lies in the microscopic asbestos fibers that have the potential to remain in the air for a long period of time. The long duration of airborne asbestos fibers is potentially lethal in that workers could inhale the toxic particles even several days afterward the initial exposure.

One major industry with asbestos exposure is the automobile industry where asbestos is used in high friction parts. They are the ones working on cars that contain older parts creates a constant risk and protective gear is rarely worn to prevent exposure.

Consider checking with your employer to see if your work place is save from mesothelioma asbestos exposure. It may perserve you and your family!
